Motorcycle Accidents in Ohio

Columbus, OH - Motorcycle Injury Crash at Sullivant Ave & Westgate AveMotorcyclists are much more vulnerable to the dangers of the road than those traveling passenger cars. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are nearly 27 times more likely to suffer fatal injuries in the event of a collision compared to passenger-vehicle occupants. Motorcycle accidents are over-represented in national roadway fatalities across the country.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol records and monitors collisions reported across the state, including motorcycle collisions. The data reveals that there were a total of 3,826 reported motorcycle collisions in the state in 2017. Of those collisions, 157 resulted in fatalities and 3,162 resulted in injuries. There were 200 reported motorcycle fatalities in Ohio in 2016.

Motorcyclists, even when they follow the necessary safety protocol, have little protection when colliding with a motor vehicle, and this places them at greater risk of suffering serious to life-threatening injuries in the event of a collision. Common road hazards that are just slight inconveniences for passengers of larger motor vehicles, such as potholes, ice, cracks, or slick roads are a much greater risk for riders than drivers. Ohio motorcycle crashes can leave riders paralyzed, as amputees, or with other types of permanent disability that can greatly impact their ability to live their lives as they once could.
